Description

Laojun Mountain was named for the deified founder of Daoism.Legends go that as Laojun passed the mountain, he dropped his magic mirror. The shattered pieces later turned into the 99 dazzling lakes of Laojun Mountain.

Laojun Mountain includes an area of 1085 square kilometres with elevations ranging from 2100 to 4513 metres (6890 to 14806 ft).The region was included in the Three Parallel Rivers UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, and the Laojun Mountain National Park was announced in January 2009.

Laojun Mountain

Laojun Mountain belongs to Danxia landform, which is formed from red-coloured sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age.The landforms look very much like karst topography that forms in areas underlain by limestones, but since the rocks that form danxia are sandstones and conglomerates, they have been called “pseudo-karst” landforms.

Laojun Mountain

Laojun Mountain region is a biodiversity hotspot and it has over 170 species of wild mushroom, about 10% of all rhododendrons in the world, and it is one of the few remaining places where the endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) can be found.19 of the 92 mammal species and 79 of the 152 bird species found at Laojun Mountain are included on the global Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) list.

Attraction

The landscape of Laojun Mountain is amazing, the sunrise and sunset are perfect for photographing. The formed sandstones appears red color under sunshine, and the shape of sandstone looks like thousands of tortoise are moving forward to the top of mountain.

Rock Climbing is very popular outdoor activities in Laojun Mountain area.Climbers are able to spend one week to experience different grade of climbing route.

If visitors don’t have climbing skills,The Iron Road could be a good option for people who would like to dance on the edge of rock. The Iron Road (Italian Name : Via Ferrata,Chinese Name : Fei La Da),is a protected climbing route found in the Alps and certain other locations. The essence of Iron Road is a steel cable which runs along the route and is periodically (every 3 to 10 metres (9.8 to 33 ft)) fixed to the rock. The origins of Iron Road date back to the nineteenth century,it is strongly associated with the First World War, when several were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy to aid the movement of troops.

Via Ferrata

It will cost several days to hike from Lijiang Laojun Mountain Scenic Spot to 99 Dragon Ponds in Dali. This is tough hiking trip for hikers who will climb over passes, hike through virgin forest which is nature reserve and nobody live there. It is necessary to have local guide and stuff transportation team during the adventure tour. It’s nice to hike in Laojun Mountain area when the azaleas bloom in May.

Lisu minority lives in Laojun Mountain area, they will come together and dance around bonfire every evening. This is good chance to communicate with they and taste Lisu ethnic rice wine.
